E.ON Implementing erwin Data Governance Platform for Competitive Differentiation within the Energy Industry

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 27, 2019 — erwin, Inc., the data governance company, today announced that E.ON is deploying the erwin Data Governance (DG) platform across five of its international operating units. E.ON is a privately-owned energy supplier based in Essen, Germany, with approximately 43,000 employees focused on energy networks, customer solutions and renewables throughout the US, EMEA and APJ.

The erwin DG software will be used to deliver “data governance as a service” for one-stop data access and lineage within the organization’s data lake that includes numerous sources such as ERP, CRM, BI, ticketing and customer service systems. The goals of this initiative are to standardize the company’s vocabulary, meet regulatory compliance requirements, and understand and then optimize how data is used across global operations.

“As a pioneer within our sector, E.ON invests in new ideas and products to generate, store and optimize energy efficiency” explains Dr. Juan Bernabe-Moreno, Global Head of Advanced Analytics and AI for E.ON. “To accomplish that mission, we must make the most of our data assets, because digital transformation and data intelligence is central to modern business. We must treat our data as a strategic asset in shaping our products and services in addition to helping us better understand our customers and ensure we meet health, safety, environmental and data security and privacy standards.”

For example, E.ON has installed more than one million smart energy meters that give  customers more control of their energy usage and costs with convenient, automatic payment options. With accurate, data-driven insights made possible with erwin DG, E.ON can provide relevant information to those areas of the business responsible for the smart meter program – from field services to marketing to accounts receivable – to improve service, develop incentives and enhance financial reporting.

“We selected erwin as our data governance partner because of the solution’s comprehensive metadata management, data harvesting and automated data lineage capabilities,” says Romina Medici, Data Manager at E.ON. “What that means is that E.ON will be able to serve the right data to the right people according to their roles and responsibilities, with confidence in its quality. Then they can use it to make better, faster decisions that ultimately improve our performance as an energy company.”

E.ON estimates a potential savings of 30 percent on external data management costs and a 50 percent reduction in time spent on data discovery, according to Medici. “Better data availability and quality will have a direct impact on productivity for each data-driven activity across E.ON,” she adds.

“We’re delighted E.ON chose to work with erwin on their data readiness initiative, including metadata management and data governance as key pillars,” says Adam Famularo, erwin’s CEO. “We’re excited to be involved with an organization that has a passion for innovation and customer service, embracing the strategic value of data in delivering on those objectives. This is the type of deployment that will add to the education and enrichment of our respective industries and their best practices.”

The firm lists these segments as data profiling and stewardship, master data definition and control, data cataloging and data lineage management. IDC created this view to size and forecast software used in data governance, data quality management, and self-service data – each significant in this new era of digital transformation and complex regulatory restrictions.

“Data intelligence software provides resources across business and IT with information to improve data literacy and knowledge, supporting data governance and protection capabilities that can enable the organization with data,” said Stewart Bond, director of Data Integration and Integrity Software research at IDC. “Vendors profiled in this report are disrupting the market with new innovations that insert automation, collaboration, and machine learning into collecting, managing, and analyzing the data about data.”

The erwin EDGE platform, with data governance at its hub and surrounded by data mapping in addition to business process, enterprise architecture and data modeling capabilities, “provides a data-first focus in enterprise context,” as described by IDC. The software portfolio’s goal is to harmonize IT-driven data management with business-led data governance to unleash the power of enterprise data by unlocking accurate, actionable insights that lead to innovation and transformation while mitigating data-related risks.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized as an IDC Innovator for the work our team has done to create a software platform that delivers an ‘enterprise data governance experience’ so both IT and business stakeholders can collaborate to make sound decisions that benefit their organizations,” says Adam Famularo, erwin’s CEO. “There’s a lot of excitement among our customers and prospects when they realize how we’ve innovated beyond data modeling to address the entire data management and governance lifecycle. erwin Releases New Version of Automated Enterprise Data Mapping Solution, Key Component of EDGE Data Governance Platform

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 7 – erwin, Inc., the data governance company, today announced the release of erwin Mapping Manager (MM) 9.0. It is the first version of the automated, metadata-driven enterprise data mapping solution released by erwin as part of its EDGE platform, following the company’s acquisition last August of AnalytiX DS, the software’s original patent owner.

With the broadest set of metadata connectors and automated code generation, data mapping and cataloging tools, erwin MM combines data management and data governance processes in an automated flow, giving organizations visibility and control over their disparate data streams – from harvesting to aggregation and integration, including transformation with complete upstream and downstream lineage. Its hallmark is a standardized, efficient and cost-effective approach to data delivery (business glossaries connect physical metadata to specific business terms) and metadata management (via data mappings).

Data professionals spend 80 percent of their time looking for and preparing data and only 20 percent of their time on analysis, according to a recent IDC Technology Spotlight sponsored by erwin. As Stewart Bond, IDC’s research director for data integration and integrity software, writes in Data Intelligence in Context: Enabling Data Governance for Digital Transformation, “Data intelligence software has the potential to change this ratio, giving users the ability to find data easier and understand context and definitions for better integration, resulting in more time for analysis.”

“Data governance starts with data management, but manually cataloging and documenting operational systems, processes and the associated data at rest and in motion has been time-consuming and prone to errors,” says Adam Famularo, erwin’s CEO. “With erwin MM, knowledge workers can spend more time analyzing their organization’s data to produce meaningful business outcomes, and they can see where it is, where it’s been, how it transformed along the way, and if there are any associated sensitivities or risks. Then stakeholders have a full inventory of reliable information on which to base decisions, whether that’s meeting regulatory compliance requirements or adjusting customer service procedures.”

Both IT and the business benefit from erwin MM and the automation framework that automatically connects technical and business objects so both sets of stakeholders can easily visualize the organization’s most valuable data assets, explains Mike Boggs, erwin’s CTO and head of the company’s center of excellence for its data governance and data modeling solutions. “Being able to rely on automated and repeatable processes can save up to 50 percent on design and accelerate project delivery by as much as 70 percent, reducing human errors along the way,” he notes. “Such sustainability and time-to-value is key to our EDGE platform for an ‘enterprise data governance experience’ that facilitates collaboration between data generators, keepers and consumers in organizations that want more control, value and differentiation with their data.”

Key features and benefits of erwin MM and its automation framework are:

  • Automated metadata harvesting and cataloging from more than 80 data sources, including Big Data, BI reports, modeling tools, relational data and data from many other types of business and IT systems
  • Intelligent linking of business terms, data catalogs, data policies and data lineage
  • Mapping of source-to-target systems to show lineage and transformation of data across the enterprise
  • Automatic integration and visualization of mappings between data models
  • Automatic data lineage and auto documentation and reverse-engineering of existing ETL processes and procedural code into business-user-friendly data lineage
  • Automation framework to generate code for data integration initiatives, such as Big Data, cloud migrations and digital transformation initiatives
  • Powerful impact analysis to show links from physical assets to business representations
  • Business User Portal that shows high-value data assets in a format easy for business users to search, discover and view how data is being used across the organization
  • Lifecycle management capabilities, including requirements management, testing, release management and version control for enterprise usage and tracking
  • Automated linkage and synchronization with core data governance capabilities

The primary enhancements to erwin MM 9.0 focus on 1) metadata enrichment, including extended properties, inheritance and automated creation of related business metadata; 2) stakeholder collaboration, including an enhanced Business User Portal, out-of-the-box workflows, workflow configuration and customization; and mind map relationship diagrams showing the connections between governed IT and business objects, including downstream business terms, policies, data catalogs and data lineage; and 3) enterprise connectivity, including SAML integration, bulk import of metadata properties and erwin DM NSM integration.

erwin Hires Director of Product Management for Enterprise Architecture and Business Process

Melville, N.Y. – January 23, 2019erwin, Inc, the data governance company, today announced that Manuel Ponchaux has joined the company as Director of Product Management, responsible for the company’s enterprise architecture (EA) and business process (BP) solutions.

In today’s modern, competitive business landscape, it’s imperative that employees, business leaders and decision makers can understand their systems, technology and processes and how people interact with them. EA and BP tools are crucial to aligning the business and IT, and helping both leverage their data to mitigate risk, and enable innovation and digital transformation.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Manuel in this role to further innovate around our EA and BP solutions as part of the erwin EDGE platform,” said Martin Owen, erwin’s Senior Vice President of Product Strategy. “EA and BP modeling are critical in providing insights that impact whether an organization can execute against its strategy and produce the desired outcomes, including any data-driven initiative.”

Ponchaux has more than 15 years of experience in EA and product management, most recently overseeing enterprise, solution, infrastructure and data architecture at Travis Perkins PLC. Before that, he was a senior consultant at IBM focused primarily on EA. Prior roles involved customer technical support, technical sales and product management. Ponchaux holds degrees in computing, applied mathematics and economic sciences, as well as certifications in EA, project management and Agile software development.

“EA and BP tools are critical for the business and IT to communicate with each other, as well as shaping the enterprise management and governance picture,” notes Ponchaux. “I’m excited to join the erwin team to help customers succeed in their digital and business transformation initiatives and embrace their role in shaping competitive advantage.”

erwin EA shows organizations where innovation is lagging or how it can be used to drive competitive advantage. Businesses can define application capabilities and interdependencies within the context of their connection to enterprise strategy to prioritize technology investments so they align with business goals and strategies to produce the desired outcomes.

Business process modeling is also vital because it defines how the business operates and ensures employees understand and are accountable for carrying out the processes for which they are responsible. With erwin BP enterprises can clearly define, map and analyze workflows and build models to drive process improvement, as well as identify business practices susceptible to the greatest security, compliance or other risks and where controls are most needed to mitigate exposures.

Melville, N.Y. – January 14, 2019 – Driven by the expansion of its data modeling business and bookings of new data governance projects, erwin, Inc. closed a strong fiscal year in 2018 with continued momentum expected for 2019. The company saw more than 300 new logo deals across several vertical sectors including healthcare, pharma, public sector, manufacturing, insurance and financial services.

“This past year, we experienced significant interest and growth in our data governance and data management solutions,” said Adam Famularo, CEO, erwin. “Our acquisition of metadata management company AnalytiX DS (ADS) was a game changer. It positions us as one of the only software providers to own and fully integrate each area of data governance and management. Additionally, new regulations like GDPR and a growing awareness of the value of data as an asset that needs to be protected, managed and maintained significantly contributed to our growth across a variety of industry sectors.”

Data governance is no longer solely about compliance and it is no longer optional. As the need to leverage data increases for digital transformation efforts, so does the need to protect data in complex ecosystems as well as business, IT, and data environments. Additionally, as adoption for data governance grows, best-in-breed enterprises are looking at how their data can be used as a competitive advantage. These organizations are evolving their data governance practices to data intelligence – connecting all the pieces of their data management and data governance lifecycles to create actionable insights.

One such organization is E.ON, one of the world’s leading energy providers. Romina Medici, E.ON’s data manager, says, “We selected erwin due to the perfect fit between our strategic and functional requirements and their comprehensive and connected platform.” Continued Medici, “We are excited to deploy erwin DG and strongly believe that the solution’s powerful capabilities will help us deliver best-in-class “data governance-as-a-service” to our worldwide data user community.”

“Data and AI have the potential of reshaping the whole energy industry, but we can only make the most of our data assets with the right metadata management and governance in place. We invested months selecting the right partner. We didn’t want to take any risk, and that’s why we chose erwin DG,” stated Dr. Juan Bernabé-Moreno, Global Head of Advanced Analytics and AI for E.ON.

According to  IDC’s Data Intelligence in Context Technology Spotlight sponsored by erwin, “Professionals who work with data spend 80% of their time looking for and preparing data and only 20% of their time on analytics.
