ALISO VIEJO, CALIF. – January 5, 2021 – Quest Software, a global systems management, data protection and security software provider, today announced the acquisition of erwin, Inc. to enable organizations to realize the exceptional business benefits of data fully. Erwin’s solutions strengthen Quest’s market-leading data toolset, adding new capabilities to drive significant data initiatives and the deployment of modern applications while ensuring regulatory compliance. The deal further spotlights Quest as a leading software provider for critical enterprise IT challenges.

Erwin’s products address the increasingly important intersection between IT’s needs to administer and govern enterprise data and the business users who leverage the data. As organizations transform to become increasingly data-driven and wrestle with regulatory compliance and other business drivers, the data ecosystem is becoming more complex. Quest’s and erwin’s products together help customers exploit enterprise data as a core asset to the business by providing infrastructure to manage and govern the data.

“Data-centric projects are rapidly accelerating across the enterprise. Together, Quest and erwin will continue to deliver database tools aimed at helping companies know their data, alleviating concerns about where and how their data is used.” said Patrick Nichols, CEO of Quest Software. ” Quest’s focus on ‘Where next meets now’ drives every new capability we add to our products and each new investment.  Quest was already dominant in database tooling and performance monitoring, and now by combining with erwin’s industry-leading data modeling, data intelligence, and Evolve products, this acquisition further establishes Quest as a major player in the enterprise data management market end-to-end.”

With erwin, Quest offers industry-leading solutions across several crucial emerging technology categories:

Data modeling: The erwin Data Modeler streamlines big data application development by drawing on data from multiple data sources, structured and unstructured formats, and multiple systems. As companies take on more big data initiatives, data modeling simplifies the migration of legacy data to cloud data stores and data lakes.

Metadata management and data intelligence: The erwin Data Intelligence Suite locates and classifies data. It also identifies who is accessing data and which sensitive data requires extra care. A clear understanding of metadata informs data governance and ensures compliance with an increasing number of data use regulations.

Business process modeling: The erwin Evolve Suite aids regulatory and industry compliance and maps business systems that support the enterprise. Quest and erwin solutions drive business process transformation and systems implementation for large ERP, cloud, and other major technology deployments across the globe.

“More than 3,500 erwin customers have already realized the benefits of our enterprise data management experience to build a governed, sustainable pipeline for big data efforts,” said Adam Famularo, CEO of erwin, Inc. “Quest and erwin’s products together provide a powerful solution for the digital transformation that today’s enterprises require to stay competitive and address ever-growing concerns of stewardship and compliance. Thanks to metadata-driven automation, all stakeholders can discover, harvest, understand, govern, and socialize data assets to unleash more potential and greater value while mitigating risk.”

Erwin joins Quest’s Information Systems and Management (ISM) business unit, which contains the Database Management, Data Protection, and Unified Endpoint Management solutions. These products include well-recognized brands such as Toad, Foglight, SharePlex, NetVault, and KACE. Quest’s ISM business unit focuses on helping companies manage, monitor, move, and protect data within their enterprises.

“Data has never been more important to our customers than now, and organizations are building data-driven cultures, democratizing the use of data, and modernizing their overall data strategies.  Enterprise data initiatives bring new operational and governance needs, and Quest is now uniquely positioned to help customers address those needs before they become major challenges,” said Heath Thompson, president and general manager of Quest’s ISM business unit.  “With this acquisition, we will extend Quest’s global reach to erwin customers, including our outstanding services and support, and Quest and erwin customers will both benefit from Quest’s ongoing investments and innovations in data management and data governance.”

erwin Expands Collaboration with Microsoft to Consolidate and Strengthen Data Management and Enterprise Architecture for Joint Customers

MELVILLE, N.Y., December 8, 2020 erwin, Inc., the  data governance company, today announced that its collaboration with Microsoft now will span across its data management and enterprise architecture products to help customers modernize their data architectures, successfully complete digital transformation efforts, and improve analytics and reporting. The expanded collaboration includes:

  • erwin Data Modeler (erwin DM) support for Microsoft Azure Synapse for data warehousing and analytics
  • erwin DM out-of-the-box support for the Microsoft Common Data Model (CDM), a framework and definitions for standards and best practices in developing common data definitions with semantic meanings for modern applications, analytics and reporting requirements
  • erwin Data Intelligence (erwin DI) out-of-the-box support for CDM-derived and enriched business glossaries for semantic consistency across business transaction domains and industries
  • erwin Cloud Catalyst support to harvest and map data models/schemas from existing databases to Azure data platforms, accelerate the migration process, and provide an integrated view of metadata within context for business users

Additionally, erwin Evolve supports enterprise architecture and business process documentation and analysis for Azure-based projects. In fact, erwin Evolve running on Azure itself supports some of the largest digital transformation initiatives, including those at CoreLogic, Fidelity and HSBC.

During erwin’s virtual conference in October, erwin and Microsoft presented a session on the power of the CDM that included a demonstration of how to create a data lake for disparate data sources, migrate all that data to it, and then provide business users with contextual views of the underlying metadata, based on a CDM-enriched business glossary. The simulation also discussed the automatic generation of scripts for ETL tools, as well as the auto generation of data lineage diagrams and impact analysis so data governance is built in and continuous.

“Digital modernization and business transformation requires a broad spectrum of capabilities, especially as organizations are still trying to manage the radical disruption unfolding because of the global pandemic,” notes Adam Famularo, CEO of erwin, Inc. “Working together, erwin and Microsoft can help you get a handle on disparate data, put it in one place, and then determine how to do something meaningful with it. We can absolutely help you answer the fundamental questions of what data and where, so you can unlock its value and that includes taking rich metadata and making it more relevant to the business for overall data intelligence.”

“erwin’s support of Microsoft technologies helps organizations across industries modernize their IT infrastructures,” explains John Macintyre, Director of Product Management for Microsoft Azure Synapse. “Data management and enterprise architecture are key to ensuring the success of any modernization effort, but especially the adoption of cloud data platforms. We look forward to continuing work with erwin so our customers can benefit by discovering, understanding and using their data assets to greater advantage.”

erwin Enhances Its Data Intelligence Suite with New UI, AI and Self-Service Data Discovery Capabilities

MELVILLE, N.Y., December 3, 2020 – erwin, Inc., the data governance company, today announced a new version of the erwin Data Intelligence Suite (erwin DI), including enhancements to the user interface (UI), plus new artificial intelligence (AI) and self-service data discovery capabilities. The new erwin DI makes it easier for organizations to tailor the solution to meet the unique needs of their data governance frameworks, identify and socialize the most valuable data assets, and expand metadata scanning and sensitive data tracking.

“erwin customers are powering comprehensive data governance initiatives, cloud migration and other massive digital transformation projects with erwin DI,” explains Adam Famularo, erwin’s CEO. “It facilitates both IT- and business-friendly discovery, navigation and understanding of data assets within context and in line with governance protocols. Now erwin DI provides organizations with even more flexibility to ensure the software fits their unique frameworks and workflows because one size does not fit all when it comes to data governance.”

Backed by a flexible metamodel and deep metadata-driven automation, erwin DI uniquely addresses both IT and business data governance needs to harness opportunities and safeguard against risks. It combines and then raises the visibility of business and physical data assets in a framework that is flexible but always in sync and therefore sustainable. Then stakeholders from across the enterprise can discover, manage, and collaborate on the most relevant and valuable data assets.

erwin DI was evaluated by Gartner for the 2020 “Metadata Management Solutions Magic Quadrant,” which names erwin as a “Leader” for the second consecutive year. The report cites “data governance is the primary use case for erwin metadata management solutions.”

The latest erwin DI release builds on prior 2020 updates with:

  • New role-based and governance assignment capabilities, making it easier for an organization to tailor erwin DI to its data governance needs and framework
  • Enhanced UI, workflow and search to speed navigation, asset discovery, contextual understanding and data governance management
  • Expanded AI capabilities to enrich metadata scanning and speed the handling of sensitive data for automated GDPR and CCPA compliance programs
  • Greater visibility into business and data lineage through new vantage points, filters and drilldowns
  • Improved socialization and collaboration features to increase business user engagement and capitalize on organizational data quality knowledge

erwin Named a Leader in the Gartner 2020 “Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions” for the Second Year in a Row

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 19, 2020 — erwin, the data governance company, today announced it has been positioned as a Leader in the Gartner 2020 “Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions.” This is the second consecutive year erwin has been named in the Leaders quadrant.

Gartner says: “Metadata management is a core aspect of an organization’s ability to manage its data and information assets. The term ‘metadata’ describes the various facets of an information asset that can improve its usability throughout its life cycle.” Additionally, “The market for metadata management solutions is complex because these solutions are not all identical in scope or capability. Vendors include companies with one or more of the following functional capabilities in their stand-alone metadata management products (not all vendors offer all these capabilities, and not all vendor solutions offer these capabilities in one product): metadata repositories, business glossary, data lineage, impact analysis, rule management, semantic frameworks, and metadata connectors for ingestion and translation.

The Garter Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions provides a detailed overview of the market, including evaluations of 17 vendors based on completeness of vision and ability to execute. The report and Magic Quadrant graphic can be downloaded here.

erwin’s metadata management offering, the erwin Data Intelligence Suite (erwin DI), includes data catalog, data literacy and automation capabilities for greater awareness of and access to data assets, guidance on their use, and guardrails to ensure data policies and best practices are followed. With erwin DI’s automated, metadata-driven framework, organizations have visibility and control over their disparate data streams – from harvesting to aggregation and integration, including transformation with complete upstream and downstream lineage and all the associated documentation.

“We are honored to be recognized for the second year in a row as a Leader by Gartner in its 2020 Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions. And we believe that our position enhancements in both vision and ability to execute affirm the power and value of our Data Intelligence Suite,” explained Adam Famularo, erwin’s CEO. “With the radical disruption global organizations have experienced this year, the need for timely and accurate data has never been greater. erwin is excited to help promote data literacy and intelligence, working with our customers to understand their data truth and be more strategic with it.”
