How to Derive a Model
You derive a new model from an existing model and transition from one design layer to another using the Derive Model Wizard.
You use the Derive Model wizard to customize derive options before starting the derive process. You can also save your settings as a session, and load the setting later when you want to repeat the derive process.
The Derive Model wizard includes five panes that let you do the following:
- In the Source Model pane, select a source model from models open in memory, or load a different model from a file.
- In the Target Model pane, assign a model type, and (for physical models) select the target database for the new model.
- In the Type Selection pane, apply filters to control the type of objects to be derived . You can filter by logical, physical, or database level objects, and use a customized option set of filter options.
- In the Object Selection pane, select the model objects to include in the derived model.
- In the Naming Standards pane, define model object naming rules to meet the naming and syntax rules of the target database.
After you create a new model using the Derive Model wizard, the model appears in the Model pane in the Model Explorer and the model has a list of associated model sources. The model source that is created in the child model is only for the link between the new child model and the parent model from which it was derived.
